I consulted over ten suggested lists from sources such as the National Flute Association and professor websites to formulate this list of repertoire. I also considered my own repertoire gaps and strengths. Instead of using these lists as required repertoire, I consider them “Guided Repertoire Curriculums” to avoid absolutism. Understanding that my future students will come from varied backgrounds, I think this list codifies my expectations of varying levels (high school/undergraduate/graduate) and students will have the opportunity to fill in major repertoire deficiencies. For the undergraduate list, I added a suggested year in school to start each piece.

Though I feel this selection is pivotal for one’s performance portfolio, I also encourage students to let their musical interests and values guide them in discovering other repertoire. As a musical rogue myself, I relate to the students who avoid the canon, but this can lead to a repertoire library not suitable for future job applications. The difficulty in balancing core repertoire with marginal works sparked my original interest in repertoire suggestions and these curriculums are the culmination of my efforts in helping future students succeed where I struggled in my time as a student.
